United Nations Association
Marjorie Hendley, a network member, is Chair of the Stockport branch of the UNA in the UK. The UNA declares a theme for each decade. You may be aware that 2001 – 2010 was designated by the UN as The International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World.
During that Decade, with the tremendous support and involvement of many local organisations, Stockport Branch of the United Nations Associations was able to launch a number of projects including Music For Peace, Art For Peace and Poems For Peace.
For the 10 year period 2011-2021, the UNA has declared a decade of Inter-religious and Intercultural Dialogue, Understanding and Cooperation for Peace. The UN vision is “for a genuine and lasting peace based on more equitable, fraternal and harmonious societies––societies that fully respect human rights and all manifestations of life, in which sharing is more important than competing, where dialogue replaces all forms of violence for resolving conflicts, and where cultural and religious diversity are appreciated. We seek a peace that is deeply rooted in diverse people’s cultures as well as in the hearts of all human beings.”
The UNA would like to hear any ideas from members of the network on how to carry the theme of this decade forward – please contact them either through Liz and Bev or directly through Catherine Eckersley, who is secretary of the Stockport Branch of the UNA (and also a network member).
